Overview of E-Defense

Overview

  • E-Defense is the world’s largest shaking table test facility, capable of shaking full-scale structures weighing up to 1,200 tons using three-dimensional seismic motions until they collapse.
  • The 300m2 shaking table can accurately reproduce the ground motions recorded during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake.
  • Since beginning operation in 2005, the facility has successfully conducted 127 experiments without accident. (As of May 20, 2024)
  • Available as a shared facility for use by various institutions (34 joint research projects, 52 facility rentals).
  • Total construction cost: approx. 45 million yen.
  • Promoting research and development (in-house and joint research) as well as facility rental by utilizing experimental data that accurately reproduces behavior under real-world conditions at E-Defense (including damage and response of countermeasure technologies).
