The conference provided researchers and practitioners with an important opportunity to share the latest knowledge, technologies, and practices for understanding and mitigating earthquake damage. Participants from across the earthquake engineering community discussed recent research findings, advances in professional practice, and emerging issues related to seismic hazards, risk assessment, disaster mitigation, and public policy. This conference is organizing by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) in Portland, Oregon. Portland was a particularly relevant location because, in addition to being a vibrant and inclusive city, it’s also a region with significant hazard from the Cascadia Subduction Zone as well as a system of local faults.
From Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center of NIED, Dr. Nishi and Dr. Lin attended the conference and exchanged technical information and research ideas with researchers from around the world.
One notable activity was the Nonstructural Fragility Database Development Hackathon, organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Through this workshop, we learned about the recently developed Nonstructural Element Database (NED), an open-source relational database containing a comprehensive collection of nonstructural component test data and fragility models. During the hands-on exercises, we established the database environment on our local computers, practiced importing new data, and reviewed the database structure, contributor guidelines, and available resources. This database framework may potentially be applied to organizing and disseminating relevant experimental results obtained through E-Defense projects.
The networking events also provided valuable opportunities to discuss current research topics, possible collaborations, and the future use of large-scale experimental data. Several researchers presented studies that utilized data obtained from E-Defense experiments. For example, a professor from the University of California, Irvine introduced a three-dimensional modeling technique for investigating the vertical seismic response of steel buildings. The proposed method was validated using data from the ten-story steel building tested at E-Defense in 2023. In another presentation, a graduate student from Stanford University discussed the higher-mode responses of frame-spine and frame-spine-FLC specimens tested on the E-Defense shaking table as part of a U.S.–Japan collaborative research project.
Participation in 13NCEE provided useful insight into current research trends and engineering practices in the United States and other countries. The knowledge, professional connections, and new research ideas gained through the technical sessions, workshop, and discussions will contribute to ongoing and future research projects at E-Defense.

Event Venue

The 13th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering (13NCEE) was held from July 13 to 17 at Oregon Conventi…

[2

post-736","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-today
["GET
